Ellena woke before sunrise. The trees outside her window swayed in the wind and clouds formed over head. She winced at the sight. It reminded her of that night...Ellena shook the memory away and quickly got dressed. She decided that it was best to test out this plan of theirs before the meeting at sunrise.
Quickly making her way down the corridor to Darius’ room she noticed something. There was this strange feeling inside of her body. She wasn’t sure what it was, but she knew it was something abnormal, or at least unfamiliar. She ignored the sensation inside her abdomen and pressed on. As she arrived at Darius’ door she knocked. The door opened slightly and Ellena let herself in.
“You’re up early.” Darius commented.
“I could say the same for you,” Ellena said smiling.
“The sun will rise any moment. The meeting will start soon,” Darius said glancing out his bedroom window.
“Which is precisely why I am here a tad early.”
Darius raised his eyebrow indicating his confusion.
“We wanted to test out this whole idea of moving the entire planet to Dream World...” Ellena reminded him.
“Oh! Right, right...that. Alright let’s go test this real quick then. We wouldn’t want to be late to our own emergency meeting,” Darius chuckled.
Ellena sat in the rose garden next to the Estate while Darius walked off somewhere in order to test their idea. A vision began to form in her head. She could see Darius walking off into the forest nearby. He picked a rock off the ground and continued to walk. Suddenly, he chucked the rock at a tree in front of him. Ellena watched carefully in order to gather every detail. Darius quickly turned around and began to head back to the estate. Ellena frantically looked for something that would be memorable and unique. Something perhaps Darius would not like to admit to. That way she knew what she saw was real.
Darius made his way swiftly through the forest. Just as the forest opened up into a grass field Darius found himself greeting it.
He had stumbled over a rock and quickly met the ground beneath his feet. Ellena giggled and was thankful something memorable had happened. A part of her wondered if somehow it was her doing...
A few minutes had passed and Darius sat down beside her on the bench in the rose garden.
“So, did you see anything?” Darius inquired.
“Yes, as a matter of fact I did,” Ellena said beaming.
“Well out with it. We need to hurry.”
Ellena brushed him off.
“I saw you walking away from the Estate. You walked into the forest heading east. Along the way you picked up a rock the size of your fist. You continued walking and then stopped in front of a tree. You threw the rock at it...” Ellena replied.
“That sounds about right. Was there anything else you noticed?”
“Yeah, you fell flat on your face when you tripped,” Ellena laughed.
“Oh...you saw that did you?”
“Yes, I did. So I guess that means that my vision is right then?” Ellena pressed her lips together trying not to laugh.
“Yes, it is all true.” Darius admitted unwillingly. “Hurry let’s get to that meeting. I am sure everyone is already there by now.” Darius grabbed her hand and they swiftly walked to the Estate.
As the opened the doors to the meeting room they saw that all the other Council members were settling in their seat.
Ellena and Darius took their place at the head of The Council.
“Good morning. I am sure you are all wondering why you are here today. I ensure you that this is a very important matter. Thus, I will get to the point. I have come across a problem with fixing the veil. From my research I have discovered a property of the veil, which I had not known previously. There is a gravity spell that is part of the veil. I am sure like myself you were unaware that our world needed such a thing. It does. The problem is I am not sure what are planet is like without it. Thus, if the veil is removed and replaced with another we could all float off of this planet if the gravity is not restored in some way. The biggest problem is I am not sure what the requirement is for us to stay on this planet. However, I have a way to test it, but it will take everyone single person on this planet to cooperate.” Ellena paused when she saw The Council members chatting amongst themselves.
“I know this might sound reckless and I am not sure if it is possible, but I need to you hear me out, and find answers to our cause. We need everyone and I mean everyone to leave this planet and enter Dream World,” Ellena added.
“Ellena what exactly are you planning to do?” Alyssa asked with deep concern in her voice.
“I am going to replace the gravity...but I will not be using a spell because I do not know how it was done. Instead I will replace it so that it will never have to be replaced again. I am going to make the planter denser, which will increase the gravity of this planet. Even if the veil ever fails again the gravity will remain.”
“How do you know you can do such a thing?” Circe asked sternly.
The entire Council began to bicker amongst themselves again. Circe gave them a look to silence them.
“If we go to Dream World I can test this out. Darius and I have figured out a way to do it. If everyone goes to Dream World I can safely test the gravity. However, no one will be able to return until I do. This is where you guys come in. I need to know how to get back from Dream World. We can take the portal to Dream World, but I need to know if there is a back, especially after removing the veil,” Ellena continued.
“Is this a risk that is necessary? Are we not better off leaving our world exposed to invaders?” Damen questioned.
“Yes, it is necessary. We already had someone invade our planet. His name is Dracul. He is powerful and seeks to turn this planet to ruins,” Ellena said with full composure despite her turmoil.
“And how do you know this information?” Osmen pried.
“Because he told me. Also he was the one who tampered with the veils in the first place. Dracul is dangerous. His powers exceed mine or at least he is very skilled. I suspect he has been around for a very long time.”
Everyone in the court sat in silence taking in the new information.
“I do not want to risk our people, but I feel we do not have a choice. We either replace the veil or be invaded. I think our first step is to find information about Dream World. Ask elders and search all libraries. The longer we wait the greater the risk for our people. If we are able to come back to our planet we need to have an emergency evacuation,” Ellena informed.
The Council looked a bit distraught, which was understandable. Even she was a bit uneasy about the situation.
“What if we are unable to come back?” Keira asked.
“We will have to decide to either, stay here and risk being invaded, or live in Dream World,” Ellena said sadly.
“Banished ones live in Dream World among other ghastly creatures,” Aiden reminded.
“Again we will have to decide our fate,” Ellena uttered.
“Let us find out the information needed in order to carry out the plan of evacuation,” Circe advised.
“Agreed, it is like Ellena said. Our first step is finding this info. Then we can decide. Our fate has yet to be set in stone,” Alyssa assured.
“This task is top priority. Put all other research at a standstill until we have either collected the information needed, or if there is nowhere left to search. We will hold our next meeting when we find answers. The other meeting will wait until this one is resolved. Hurry find out what you can. Meeting adjourned,” Circe announced.
Everyone quickly fled the room. They all knew the importance of the matter. Ellena decided to go ShTaire. She figured she would either have the information or knew someone who did. Darius made his way to the library within the Estate.
Ellena arrive at ShTaire’s home in the late morning. She rapped at the wooden door several times but there was no answer. As Ellena turned around to take her leave she saw ShTaire standing in front of her.
“So what brings you to my home today?” ShTaire said smiling.
“I had a few questions about using the portal to Dream World. I was hoping who might have some answers or know someone who does,” Ellena responded.
ShTaire gestured for Ellena to enter her home. They sat down in the living room. It seemed just yesterday she came here for training.
“So what is it you would like to know?”
“I want to know if it possible to pass back through the portal. I know this wormhole leads to Dream World but is it possible to come back?
“I believe someone in the past set it up so that could not happen. That way those who were banished could not pass through or those from dream world could not enter ours. I imagine that could have been a huge problem in the past,” ShTaire said as she grabbed a book off a nearby shelf.
“I think I have read somewhere in here that it was a spell used right at the entrance of the portal opening. I do not think it is a part of the veil. So unless you know how to remove the spell I do not think it is possible to come back,” ShTaire continued.
She paused for a moment glancing through passages in the book.
“Ah, yes. Right here is says that a man with dark powers used a spell in order to secure the portal from future intrusions.”
“I wonder if anyone knows anything about the spell...I guess it is highly unlikely someone would write down how to remove it,” Ellena commented.
“As far as I know, no there are no documentations on such a thing. I believe you are correct in your assumptions that such a thing would exist,” ShTaire affirmed.
“I am no longer certain the plans I had for the veils will work now,” Ellena admitted.
“What plans did you have in mind?”
Ellena hands cradled her face, “I wanted to move everyone to Dream World so that I could work on replacing the gravity when I removed the veil. That way, everyone would be safe when I did.”
“That sounds like quite the task.”
“Yes, it is and I wasn't even sure if it was possible. I wasn't sure I had the ability to do such a thing. Even if I could I could not do it safely with everyone here...so now I am thinking this plan is faulty. If there is no way to get to Dream World we will have to forget the plan entirely,” Ellena confessed.
“Well do not give up on my account. Be sure to do your research elsewhere and I will see what I can find out.”
“Alright, I will. Thanks again for you help ShTaire it means a lot to me.”
“You are welcome,”
“I guess I should be on my way. I have much work ahead of me,” Ellena said as she came to her feet.
“That you do. Until next time,” ShTaire also came to her feet and walked Ellena to the door.
“Farewell,” Ellena smiled and walked out the door.
A month had passed and the next meeting was now in session. With no meetings prior Ellena suspected that no one had found the information needed for her plan.
“Meeting is now in session,” Alyssa announced.
“First on the agenda is collecting information on the veils. Has anyone found any useful information?” Circe glanced around the room. It seemed no one had any information.
When no one answered Ellena spoke, “It can’t be done.”
“Ellena what you mean it can’t be done?” Alyssa bit her lower lip. She was pretty sure she knew what she meant but had to ask anyway.
“There is no way to enter Dream World and be able to come back. The only one that has able to do so is Dracul, and we have no records of how he was able to do such a thing. In fact, he is not even a race we are familiar with. He probably has powers beyond ours,”
“She is right. There is no information on returning from Dream World. I have looked up and in down every library in the Estate, including personal ones, and I have found nothing,” Darius agreed.
“I have asked many elders and none have heard of such a thing,” Keira confined.
“I too have found nothing on the matter,” Alyssa admitted.
“It seems it is well agreed then that there is no information on the veil to Dream World,” Circe noted. “If this is truly a life or death situation then I shall volunteer myself to investigate the matter. I will go to Dream World and try to find a way back, in order to insure the safety of our people.”
“That’s suicide!” Osmen shouted.
“No more than us sitting here waiting for the invasion,” Circ said flatly.
“You don’t even know if there will be an invasion!” Damen stood in outrage.
“Take your seat Damen,” Alyssa commanded.
“If we know anything about Dracul then we will be back to take his revenge. It was our people after all who banished him,” Circe said with little emotion.
“Are you sure you want to do this Circe?” Keira asked wryly.
“Yes, I am certain. I will step down from my post and someone can take my place until I return. If I do not return then that person can have my position permanently, so choose wisely.”
“Then it is decided. When Circe is ready she will make her journey to Dream World, and we shall vote on the new Head Council member,” Alyssa announced.
“Now, then for with our next agenda, has anyone come up with a compromise?” Circe pressed on in order to push aside her fears.
“I say kill all hybrids!” Damen exclaimed.
“A bit extreme wouldn’t you say?” Keira retorted.
“Not at all. They could be dangerous!” Damen shouted.
“You don’t know that for certain,” Darius pressed.
“Hold on a minute. Would someone like to enlighten me?” Ellena said a little perplexed.
“Oh, yes sorry Ellena. I had forgotten you had missed that meeting,” Alyssa reminded herself. “We are trying to find a compromise that would allow intermarriage. It must be a way in which would prevent children from coming about.”
“I see.” Ellena was a bit surprised but she did not show it on her face. She figured it must have been Darius’ doing.
“What if we use magic to alter the male? “ Calanon suggested.
Everyone’s head turned and look at Calanon. Most had forgotten he was a new member of The Council, especially with how quiet he could be.
“How would we do this alteration?” Circe inquired.
“Not sure yet but it is a thought,” Calanon admitted.
“True,” Circe agreed.
“Any suggestions on how such an alteration could be done?” Alyssa proposed.
“I think it is possible to trace the source that creates life. I believe I can find this source and disconnect it using my powers,” Ellena offered.
“If you believe it is possible, then it should be agreed upon that intermarriage is now lawful,” Alyssa mandated.
“But we are not yet certain this is possible,” Osmen argued.
“I trust in Ellena’s abilities. I also trust her character,” Alyssa said eyeing Osmen.
Osmen fell silent.
“Does everyone agree with this process?” Circe asked The Council.
All hands rose in agreement.
“Thus then it is mutually agreed upon that intermarriage is now lawful,” Alyssa announced.
“Are there any exceptions to this law?” Darius asked hoping there were none.
“Yes, I think there should be one exception. Due to the fact that members within The Council cannot marry, intermarriage is of no exception,” Circe confirmed.
“I do not see how marriage would interfere with Council work,” Darius admitted.
“It is a power issue,” Circe explained.
“How so? If two members are already in love with one another how would that change when they are married, and the voting system would still be the same.”
“If both became Head Council members then it would be an issue. There would be too much power if the two worked together.”
“That is why we have a fail safe. If the rest of The Council disagrees with the two head members then it automatically throws out their votes,” Darius argued.
“What if one of the other members agrees with them? Then it throws the fail safe out the window!” Damen argued back.
“Then perhaps they just agree with their Head members. It has nothing to do with them being married or wanting power,” Ellena replied calmly.
“If they are Head members and married they could have biased opinions,” Ciz retorted.
“Any one of us could have biased opinions...you don’t have to be married to have them,” Ellena said; narrowing her eyes at Ciz. Ciz only sneered at her reply.
“Enough let us vote on this now. To settle this,” Circe commanded.
There were too many people who were biased on this subject. This was not going to fall through the way that she had hoped. Ellena thought.
Everyone waited for votes to be collected and the outcome to be announced.
“The vote is even six to six,” Alyssa declared.
“We will put this on hold. Perhaps, things will change while I am gone,” Circe professed.
“If there are no further comments then I will close this meeting,” Alyssa offered.
The Council room was silent.
Ellena sat in her room thinking about the entirety of the day. She wondered how things were going to change in the near future, so much had changed already. Ellena’s thoughts broke when there was a knock at the door.
“Who is it?”
“It is me Alyssa.”
Alyssa slowly opened the door and walked inside of Ellena’s room. She could tell that Ellena was tired.
“I will only be a moment. I promise,” Alyssa said smiling.
“You never have to worry about bothering me. You are always welcome here.”
“I know that is the reason why I try not to come to often. I know you need your rest. Any who, the reason for my visit is that I want to talk to about something personal.”
“Go on,” Ellena was curious but at the same time worried. She had no idea what Alyssa would want to talk to her about.
“You want to marry Darius don’t you?”
Ellena’s eyes went wide.
“Oh...well I...I well yes,” Ellena confessed.
“I thought so.”
“Is it that obvious?”
“To be honest...yes. The way Darius has directed his questions it has made it so. You know he often does not speak during meeting.”
“Yes, I know...I was afraid of that. We tried so hard to make the questions general.”
“I know. However, you need not be concerned with that matter. I am here to help you.”
“You are? How?” Ellena practically leapt up from where she sat.
“I am stepping down from my position as Head member. I am hoping you will take my place.”
“It is no longer my place and I know you would make a wonderful Head member. I knew it was your role long before you were born.”
“Your visions,” Ellena confirmed.
“Hopefully Darius will be able to fill in for Circe. If that is the case then you and Darius will have a chance to offset the vote and be able to legally marry.”
Ellena jumped up and hugged Alyssa. “Thank you so much. This means the world to me!”
“You are welcome. However, if this happens remember it will be your job to alter Darius. It would still be unlawful for the two of you to have children.
“Well I best be on my way. You get some rest.”
Ellena only nodded and Alyssa took her leave.
